'The Armenian Epos and the International Epic Heritage' Conference
On October 11-13, Russian-Armenian University jointly with the University of California, Los Angeles, and Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences hosted a conference 'The Armenian Epos and the International Epic Heritage' in Yerevan and Tsakhkadzor, Armenia.
RAU Vice-rector for Science Prof. Pargev Avetisyan, greeting the conference participants, emphasized that the study of epic poetry is among the main research areas at RAU.
“Technology is becoming the leading element in the intellectual field, unfortunately, we start to forget the values of humanities,” said in his turn Prof. Azat Yeghiazaryan, Head of RAU Department of Armenian Language and Literature. Yeghiazaryan. “For me, studying epos, apart from purely research interests, has a humanitarian significance”.
Peter Cowe, Narekatsi Professor of Armenian Studies Department at the University of California highlighted that studying the epic poetry links closer generations and countries culture-wise.
The conference attendees represented Abkhazia, Armenia, Germany, Iran, Russia, the UK and the USA. They discussed the history of Armenian epic tradition, references to epos in literature, international epic heritage and drawn parallels between different national epic poetries, mythological images and much more. The full papers of the presented reports will be published in conference proceedings.
The conference was confined to the 20th anniversary of Russian-Armenian University.
