Department of Physics and Technology

The Department of the Physics and Technology of RAU was established in 2003 on the basis of the problematic science group, created in RAU –“ Physical basis of nano- and optoelectronics”, headed by academic of  National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia E.M. Kazaryan.

The Department offers a training of Bachelors and Masters of techniques and technology in the direction of 550700-“Electronics, microelectronics and telecomunications”.  The faculty is preparing engineer-physics for the enterprises with science technologies and science-research organizations in the field of contemporary electronics, optoelectronics, physical material science and fiber optic systems of  foil, modern communication systems: satellite communications, cellular communications, optical communications. The graduates of the Department will possess the fundamental physic-mathematical techniques, possess the computer technologies and will have the experience of science-research work.

The study plan of the Department of physics and technology includes the general disciplines: general physics, higher mathematics, computer methods of physics, theoretical physics, humanitarian disciplines, foreign languages, etc.

The most important element of the study process is the profound preparation for the theoretical physics, physics of condensed matter, semiconductors and quantum nanostructures of semiconductors.  Great attention in the study process is being paid to the practical training sessions, studies at laboratories chosen according to the specialization, industrial and pregraduation practices.  The students’ individual work at the basic chairs of the faculty is also of great importance.

As the Department is preparing physic-researchers, the educational system proposes mandatory participation of the students at the scientific researches, starting from the 5th semester or even sooner depending on the student’s own desire.

The major course of the Physics and Technology Department is the physics and technology of the contemporary semiconductors, ferroelectric materials and nanostructures for micro-, nano- and optoelectronics.  At present in this direction scientific-research work is being carried out according to the plans of Ministry of Education of Russia, as well as according to a number of international and republican grants.  This scientific course in accordance with the resolution of the Republic of Armenia, is one of the most priority-driven in the development of science and technology in RA.

As in the field of science-research work, as well as in the field of education-methodological work, the faculty is closely cooperating with MSU, SPGSU, LETI, Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, JINR.  The faculty has international ties with the Bohum and Kayzerslautern Universities, university of Pavia (Italy), with the International center of theoretical physics in Triest  (Italy).

Laboratories of optics, mechanics and thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, atomic and quantum physics are present at the Department.  In the process of Masters’ trainings, the students are taking a direct part in the scientific researches.

Starting form the 4th year of the Bachelor's and later at the Master's the students simultaneously with their studies out the scinece-practical work in the scientific laboratories of the Institute of physical researches and the Yerevan institute of means of communications. For this purpose there are 2 basic chairs at the faculty: the chair of quantum and organic electronics situated at the institute of physical researches of The National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia  and the chair of telecommunications in Yerevan Telecommunication Research Institute.

At the Physics Department contemporary computer and informational technologies are being actively used during the study process and the scientific work (modern computer classes, Internet with the access to the global web Internet).  The powerful basic computer education includes a number of general and special lecture courses in the later years of study, besides the mandatory 2-year course of computer physics and programming at the first and the second years.
